Tennis, Gymnastics, Swimming & Other KC Academies — Where to Live

Beyond the big field and court sports, Kansas City has strong academies for tennis, gymnastics, swimming, ice sports, and sports performance. Here's where they are and how to choose a home that keeps training close.

Not every sport revolves around a tournament complex. For tennis, gymnastics, swimming, ice sports, and sports-performance training, families often train at a single facility most days of the week — which makes a short, reliable commute even more important when you’re choosing a home. Here’s where Kansas City’s academies are, and how to think about living near them.

Tennis

Tennis families oriented on the Kansas side tend to look at Overland Park, Leawood, and Prairie Village.

Gymnastics

  • Impact Gymnastics — Overland Park, KS (formerly Emerald City Gymnastics). Recreational and competitive programs through the upper USA Gymnastics levels.
  • Pinnacle Gymnastics — Shawnee, KS. A large program with locations in Shawnee and Kansas City, KS.

Because competitive gymnastics can mean daily training, families here weigh Overland Park, Shawnee, and Lenexa to keep the drive short.

Swimming

Ice sports

  • Cable Dahmer Arena — Independence, MO. Home of the KC Mavericks and an east-side youth-hockey hub.
  • KC Ice Center — Shawnee, KS. The primary Kansas-side ice facility.
  • Line Creek Ice Arena — the Northland, MO. Year-round ice for hockey, figure skating, and curling.

Ice-sport families often anchor on the east side and Northland (Missouri) or in Shawnee (Kansas), depending on their home rink.

Sports performance & multi-sport

The approach is the same

Whatever the sport, the method holds: pin the primary training facility, set a weekday drive radius you can live with, then layer in schools, budget, and neighborhood fit. For training-heavy individual sports, err toward a shorter commute — you’ll be making that drive a lot.

Let’s keep training close

Tell me the facility your child trains at most, and I’ll help you find a Kansas City home that keeps the daily drive reasonable — on either side of the state line. Call or text 913-777-4461, or browse the full facilities map.

Quick answers

Where are the main KC tennis academies?

Several are concentrated in Johnson County, Kansas — Elite Tennis and Wellness and the Overland Park Racquet Club are both in Overland Park. On the Missouri side, the Plaza Tennis Center near the Country Club Plaza is a well-known public hub. Confirm current junior-program details directly with each facility.

What about gymnastics, swimming, and ice sports?

The metro has competitive gymnastics gyms mostly on the Kansas side (Overland Park and Shawnee), long-standing swim clubs on both sides, and ice facilities anchored by Cable Dahmer Arena in Independence, KC Ice Center in Shawnee, and Line Creek in the Northland. Each facility page shows its location and links to nearby area guides.

How do we pick a home around a training-heavy sport?

Individual sports like gymnastics, swimming, and tennis often mean daily training at one facility, so a short, reliable weekday commute matters even more. Pin the primary training site, set a drive radius you can sustain, then weigh schools, budget, and neighborhood fit. Tom can help you do that across the whole metro.
