If you’re relocating around competitive soccer, the practical challenge is matching your club’s home fields to a place you’ll actually want to live. Here’s how the pieces fit together.
The major soccer venues, and the suburbs around them
SCHEELS Overland Park Soccer Complex — South Overland Park, KS. A 12-field lighted turf complex and one of Heartland’s flagship tournament homes. Families who train or compete here regularly tend to look at Overland Park, Leawood, and southern Olathe, all of which keep the drive short.
Garmin Olathe Soccer Complex — Olathe, KS. A newer nine-field turf venue near the K-10 corridor. Olathe and Lenexa are the natural fits, with Overland Park close behind.
Compass Minerals National Performance Center — Kansas City, KS. Sporting Kansas City’s training home and the top of the local academy pathway. It sits near Village West on the Wyandotte County side; families in the academy pipeline often weigh the western Johnson County and KCK areas.
Swope Soccer Village — Kansas City, MO. A city-owned nine-field complex in Swope Park that has hosted national teams. It’s the anchor if your soccer life is centered on the Missouri side of the metro.
Clubs matter as much as complexes
Tournaments happen at the big complexes, but your weekday life is set by your club’s practice site. KC has a deep club scene — from full ECNL programs like KC Athletics in Merriam to Sporting KC’s academy affiliates. When we work together, the first thing I’ll ask is where your club actually practices most weeks, because that’s the address we optimize your commute around — not the tournament venue you visit occasionally.
How to choose your home base
- Pin the primary practice site. That’s your commute anchor.
- Draw a 15–25 minute weekday radius. For the Overland Park and Olathe complexes, that radius covers most of southern Johnson County.
- Layer in schools and budget. I’ll point you to factual school district resources and we’ll look at what homes actually cost in that radius.
- Stress-test the tournament season. Make sure the occasional longer drive to a weekend tournament is one you can live with.
